Athena Press Open Studio: Monoprints and Introduction to Typesetting

Join us for our first Open Studio session for Fall 2025 semester. 

In this two-hour hands-on workshop you will:

  • Improvise your own unique monoprints with paper stencils, gel mats, ink, and paper
  • Explore the art and science of typesetting, selecting letters, arranging them in a printing galley, rolling on ink, and pulling a print on tabletop letterpress equipment
  • View examples of monoprints and typesetting from the rare book collections at Fondren Library’s Woodson Research Center.

Standalone workshop or Part 1 of 3 for Bookbinding Merit Badge

  • Merit Badge Participants will use two of their monotypes later as book covers, and will treat the typesetting as practice for their next session (Sept. 26)
  • We will ask at this first session which participants plan to attend 3 sessions and earn the Merit Badge.

Athena Press: Printmaking and Book Arts at Fondren Library

Athena Press is an interdisciplinary program for printmaking and book arts. Rooted in both creative practice and academic inquiry, the program offers dynamic, hands-on experiences through:

  • Curriculum-integrated instruction
  • Open studio sessions and guided exploration
  • Expansion of the library’s artists’ books and print collections

Explore techniques using tools like the star wheel rolling press for engraved plates, a tabletop letterpress with moveable type, and traditional bookmaking methods.
