Fondren Fellows Showcase

What is the history of industrial accidents in Houston? What can we learn from looking at annotations left in centuries-old books held in the library’s special collections? How might we understand the history of land ownership in Houston’s Freedmen's Town, where Black residents created a thriving neighborhood after Emancipation? Through the Fondren Fellows program, undergraduate and graduate students are examining these and other questions in collaboration with faculty and library mentors. Learn about the exciting work done by members of the 2025-2026 cohort at the Fondren Fellows Showcase.

This event is open to all. A reception with light refreshments will follow the lightning talks.

Speakers include:

  • Gracie Miller, Ryan Ellis and Caroline Searls, Readers’ Marks
  • Victoria Richards and Huzaifa Hasan, Who Owns Freedmen’s Town?
  • Will Howley and Cindy Yan, Building a History of Industrial Accidents and Disasters in Houston
  • Clara Luce, Medical Humanities Resources at the Woodson Research Center
  • Jun Bae and Daniel Jachero, Open Data, Open Knowledge
  • Jeslyn Cho, Computing Cultural Heritage: Processing Physical and Born-digital Data in the White House Scientists Archive

The Fondren Fellows program enables Rice undergraduate or graduate students to work on experiential learning projects that advance the library's strategic priorities. This event is part of Inquiry Weeks and is supported by OURI and Fondren Library.
