Stitch Break at Fondren Library

buttons and sewing

Wednesday, October 28, 2-4 PM

Brown Fine Arts Library
Fondren Library 3rd floor

Press pause on your screen to take up a needle and thread (or some fabric glue) to make a mini-arpillera, or a simple scrap tapestry. The tradition of sewing arpilleras comes from women living under the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile (1973-1989) gathering and sewing together as a means to process and expose the realities of daily life and violence under the repressive regime. Social activists and artists in Chile and beyond continue this tradition of sewing scenes, often collectively, to expose, process, and explore a variety of experiences. Join us in Brown Fine Arts Library to see examples of students' arpilleras on display, to take a break and make a stitch. Light refreshments and materials provided. Drop in when you can!

This program is a collaboration between Fondren Library and the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
