About Access Services
Fondren Library Access Services oversees the units responsible for making library materials available to the Rice community and beyond. Our three subdepartments work together to manage physical lending, resource sharing, course reserves, equipment loans, shelving, and building security.
Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) allows Rice students, faculty, and staff to borrow materials not held in Fondren's collections from libraries around the world, and to request digitized articles and book chapters. ILL also lends Rice materials to other institutions. Please contact staff to inquire about requests or long-distance research assistance.

Service Desk
The Service Desk serves as the primary point of contact for library users, providing circulation services, equipment loans, and general assistance. Staff support course reserves preparation and processing, handle fines and fees, troubleshoot equipment issues (elevators, printers, scanners), direct users within the library and across campus, and coordinate responses to emergency situations. Located on the first floor of Fondren Library near the Pavilion (West) entrance.

Shelving & Security Desk
The Shelving & Security Desk ensures that library materials are accurately reshelved and that the building remains a safe, welcoming environment for all users. Staff monitor building access, enforce library policies, and maintain the physical organization of the stacks.
