So that the DMC computing lab is comfortable and well-maintained, we ask that everyone abide by the following guidelines.
Access and Purpose
- The DMC lab is reserved for Rice University students, faculty, and staff. Public computers are available on the first floor of Fondren Library for general public use.
- The lab supports academic and creative work such as: web authoring, text and image scanning, audio and video editing, and graphic design and data visualization. For non-academic use or general web browsing, please use the Owlnet machines on the library’s first floor.
Lab Conduct
- In the lab, please refrain from loud talking, and use headphones if you are working with audio content.
- Do not:
- Install or delete any software/games
- unplug or power off any equipment
- send any print job to the plotter without staff permission
- If you experience technical issues, please notify a DMC staff member for assistance.
In-House Use Items
Your Rice ID will be held at the DMC service desk when you borrow the following items:
- Memory card readers
- USB drives
- Headphones
Workstation Reservations
- DMC workstations are not on any electronic booking system.
- Users can walk in to request a reservation. Our staff do the paper-based reservations.
File Storage and Responsibility
- Users are fully responsible for their own files. Save work to:
- A USB drive or external hard drive
- Cloud storage such as Rice Box - the maximum file size limit is 50GB or Google Drive
- Refer to Storage Options for Undergraduate and Graduate Students and Rice Storage, File Sharing, and Backup Solutions provided by Rice IT for your network space choices.
- Users may save their work temporarily on the DMC computers.
- The DMC does not back up user data or guarantee file integrity.
- Files may only be saved in the SaveWorkHere folder on DMC computers. Please create a subfolder named with your email handle.
- All files will be deleted at the end of each semester.
Use of Adobe CC Applications
- Rice has a site license for Adobe CC Applications that cover all the university owned devices.
- Please refer to Using Adobe Creative Cloud on Lab Computers for instructions about creating an Adobe ID, then sign in with your Rice NetID.
